Goals and guesses as reference points: a field experiment on student performance

چکیده
Abstract In this paper, we study overconfidence and goal-setting in academic performance, with without monetary incentives. Students enrolled a microeconomics course were offered the possibility of setting their own target grade before taking part final exam. They also asked to guess immediately after they had taken exam (“post-diction”). general, students overestimated both at post-diction stages. Controlling for several sources bias (cognitive abilities, record self-reported confidence), find that use rewards mitigates overestimation potential achievements eliminates actual through improvement performance. Our results suggest incentives do not cause subjects put more effort into correct guesses but make them Using students’ records measure overall skill, strong Dunning–Kruger which is intensified presence rewards.

Goals as reference points.
We argue that goals serve as reference points and alter outcomes in a manner consistent with the value function of Prospect Theory (Kahneman & Tversky, 1979; Tversky & Kahneman, 1992). We present new evidence that goals inherit the properties of the value function-not only a reference point, but also loss aversion and diminishing sensitivity. We also use the value function to explain previous e...

Expectations as Reference Points: Field Evidence from Professional Soccer
We show that professional soccer players and their coaches exhibit reference-dependent behavior during matches. Controlling for the state of the match and for unobserved heterogeneity, we show on a minute-by-minute basis that players breach the rules of the game, measured by the referee’s assignment of cards, significantly more often if their teams are behind the expected match outcome, measure...
متن کاملGoals as Reference Points: Empirical Evidence from a Virtual Reward System
Heath et al. (1999) propose a prospect theory model for goal behavior which offers insights on how goals affect individual and group performance. Their analytical model is based on the assumption that goals inherit the main properties of the prospect theory value function, i.e., reference point dependence, loss aversion, and diminishing sensitivity. Evidence from laboratory experiments as well ...
